What made you decide to run times tables masterclasses?

At The Lime Zone, we have found that some 70% of our clients require tuition in maths.  Of those clients and where they are at least year 7 level, we can almost certainly say that they did not have fast and accurate recall of their times tables or fast maths mental skills.

Multiplication (or division – the inverse) forms the basis of a lot of more complex maths. If a student is still struggling to do Step 1, they are almost certainly tuning out to Steps 2, 3 and 4. Over the years, this has a negative cumulative effect.

But why can’t my child just use a calculator?

Firstly, not every class situation allows for the use of a calculator. Secondly, let me put this question to you:

If person A knows their times tables off by heart and person B doesn’t but they have access to a calculator, who will answer 20 times tables questions the quickest?  Person A because it takes too much time to enter questions into a calculator.

You might then say, “So what”?  My answer to that is simple. Our lives today are fast moving. Everyone is busy. Anything we can do to make our lives simpler and easier we must adopt.

99% of students are very capable of learning their times tables. Some may take a little longer than others but if they are persistent, they can do it.

Do you use a specific method?

Yes. We teach our own three-step method and discourage students from moving onto the next step until they are fluent in the previous step.
